3 ideas for going out less than an hour from Paris

Giverny

Want to leave the bustle of Paris to appreciate it better when you come back? The French capital has the advantage of being close to many beautiful destinations that will break up your habits in no time!

Versailles and its castle

The residence of King Louis XIV is known throughout the world and welcomes millions of people each year. The royal estate is a luxuriant yet soothing place where you can easily spend several days: the castle, the gardens, the Petit Trianon, the Royal Stables … From Easter, the Grandes Eaux musicales even offer a show of sound and lights, waterfalls and water jets in the gardens.

Beyond the castle, Versailles itself is a must see, as well as the surrounding forests (forest of Marly, forest of Fausses-Reposes).

How long does it take to get there? 45 minutes by RER (line C) from Saint-Michel Notre-Dame.

Giverny, cradle of impressionism

Giverny attracts more and more visitors following the footsteps of one of the most important French artists of the 19th century: Claude Monet. He moved to Giverny in 1883 and it’s in this place that he found the inspiration that will make him famous. He started a concept of painting sets, consisting of painting the same landscape at different times and seasons. Nowadays his workshop and house are open to visitors.

How to get there?: One hour by car from Paris. By train: From Gare Saint Lazare to Vernon (45 min), then shuttle to Giverny (20 min).

Take a break in Fontainebleau

Since 1981, the castle and its park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. After a visit to this architectural gem, you can take part in introductory or advanced climbing block courses on the massif of Fontainebleau, or discover eco-therapy, or “forest purges” for a relaxation and meditation break. Not far from there, Vaux-le-Vicomte is also home to an exceptional castle, a must-see if you’re passing through the region.

How to get there? Less than an hour by car via the A6 motorway. By train: Transilien line R from Paris Gare de Lyon (less than 40 minutes).
